This looks like some kind of wasp but I'm not sure. The flower is milkweed.

Its a little hard to tell. It could be a fly. Did you get any other shots with the wings out? Flies have two wings, wasps and bees (hymenoptera) have four.
Many thanks for your reply. I don't have any with the wings open, but I have another that shows its body better:

First time shootin' butterflies. We don't see Monarchs on the west coast. I needed a leeetle more shutter speed.

Plain Lacewing (Cethosia penthesilea) - Kemenuh Butterfly Park, Bali, Indonesia by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

A Plain Lacewing butterfly enjoying the plant life in the Kemenuh Butterfly Park.

We spent a fair bit of time exploring the Kemenuh Butterfly Park in Bali, Indonesia. I can highly recommend it if you are in Bali and in the Ubud area.

My wife and I spent a couple hours in the Lakeside Daisy Preserve in Marblehead Ohio this morning. The preserve is a section of the working LaFarge limestone quarry that has been set aside and deeded to the state as a preserve for the Lakeside Daisy [Tetraneuris herbacea], an endangered flower that flourishes there and few other places. Its an interesting enviroment, which reminds my wife and I a bit of the Irish Burren (but a lot dryer).

In any case, not too late in the year for some pretty bug pictures. Am liking the 300 f/4 + 1.4 TC a lot. Got me thinking that the 300 + 2.0 TC and a monopod might be the ultimate tool for odonata (will GAS never end?).
